Why are we doing this?

During the month of June, Rx Ballroom Dance has set a goal of raising $10k. We are a nonprofit that provides free ballroom dance classes to participants living with neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and dementia. Ballroom dance lessons can cost over $100 per lesson, and medical insurance providers haven’t clued in yet to the fact that dance has incredible positive health effects on these conditions.

Rx Ballroom Dance refuses to accept that one of the best ways to treat neurological disease can be unaffordable or inaccessible.

We are only able to do what we do thanks to the support of a community grant from the Parkinson’s Foundation and YOU.  So THANK YOU!

We hope you’ll join us in the fun over the next couple weeks. And if you support what we stand for, please consider donating.

Rx Ballroom Dance featured on ABC7!

Did you catch the news this morning! We were on it!

We’re so excited to be able to share our story and mission with the greater Southern California community via #SoCalStrong on news channel ABC7. It hasn’t been easy for anyone during this pandemic, and we’re grateful that technology has allowed us to continue to show up for our participants.

Our online classes, just like the in-person ones, are 100% free to participants. So we need YOU to keep us all dancing.

Please help us reach our June goal with a donation today! Even just $25 covers the cost of one class.

Virtual Dance Classes Continue!

Dance has the power to lift your mood by giving you a happy boost. That magical combo of music, rhythm and movement all signal your brain’s good feeling signals (norepinephrine + serotonin + dopamine). So you can literally dance your way to a happier state of mind!

So does quarantine give you a case of the blues?  Join us Mondays and Wednesdays to kick, tap, shuffle and grapevine those negative feelings away.  You’ll thank us for those happy feet!

Classes are always free and geared toward anyone who has been diagnosed with a neurological disease (and their caregivers!). Subscribe to the mailing list for the latest schedule and class links.

Let’s Line Dance!

In order to keep grooving, you need to keep moving!

At Rx Ballroom Dance, we know a thing or two about the benefits of moving. In order to keep our physical coordination up, mental awareness sharp and emotional balance at a healthy level, we need to keep our dopamine flowing.

With everything going on in the world right now, do you need a little dopamine boost? We’re here for you.

Follow along to our Merengue or Salsa Line Dances! They are fun, easy to do and perfect for dancing from the comfort of your own home. It’s important that you keep your body moving and stimulate both the left and the right coordination centers in the brain.

So let’s get moving with these fun and easy dances!

Rx Ballroom Dance and COVID-19

Coronavirus is here and it’s changing the way we live our lives.

Here at Rx Ballroom Dance we are dedicated to ensuring all our participants are healthy and safe! So how do we accomplish this without being able to hold in-person classes?

If you haven’t heard by now, the Governor of California has put a temporary lock down on all non-essential businesses, including dance studios, prohibiting people from gathering for group classes. That means we will not be starting our Spring Session on March 23rd as we had hoped.

Even though we can’t start our Spring Session right away, we believe it’s still important to stay connected! We’ll be uploading videos from previous sessions soon, so you can review the dances and keep practicing from home. Participants will also receive emails and phone calls to keep in touch because we already miss you!

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS YOUR HEALTH AND SAFETY!

Follow directions for social distancing and keep practicing health and hygiene safety! The safer we are, the healthier we will all be! We can’t wait to see all of your faces again soon!

Happy New Year from Rx Ballroom Dance!

Student Spotlight – Glenda

Meet our beautiful participant, Glenda!

Glenda has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease and didn’t know about the beneficial power of Ballroom Dance until she visited her Neurologist’s office and learned about our program! Since enrolling, Glenda has improved her posture, her balance and her coordination! We’d like to think that we helped make that beautiful smile even brighter.

Our Late Fall Semester is about to wrap up and we’re having a party to celebrate! Come join us at Londance Studio at 27261 “J” La Paz Rd in Laguna Niguel, CA on December 18 at 7:45pm. We’ll be dancing the dances we learned over the last semester, hosting a silent auction to support classes in the new year, and having a great time! Hope to see you there!

Give the gift of dance this holiday season!

Dance has the power to change lives. We’ve witnessed it and we’ve experienced it ourselves. Thanks to dance, we are healthier, physically and emotionally. It gives us joy. Dance keeps us young.

Over the last year, Rx Ballroom Dance has been privileged to be a vehicle for this positive change in people struggling with neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. Participants in our ballroom dance program are moving with increased strength and confidence, and bigger smiles. One regular participant, Dave, has been living with Parkinson’s for 22 years and has tried it all – general exercise, yoga, boxing, and now ballroom dancing. He said ballroom has made the biggest difference in improving his quality of life:

As someone who has dealt with Parkinson’s Disease for 22 years, I support Rx Ballroom Dance because I have experienced first hand the program’s benefits, both physically and mentally. It’s also a lot of fun!

Rx Ballroom Dance’s mission is to use ballroom dancing to preserve and enhance the quality of life in people like Dave who are confronting neurological conditions. Part of that mission includes offering our ballroom dance program to participants at no charge.

This is where we need you. We know the burden of health insurance and medication can be significant barriers to allowing an individual to get the care they need. We need your financial support so we may continue to offer our dance classes free of charge to those who truly need
them.

Diseases like Parkinson’s, Alzheimers and dementia are increasing in prevalence every year. Accepted allopathic therapies are extremely limited in their effect. Numerous clinical studies demonstrate the benefit of physical and mental exercise as hedges against aging and its afflictions. Dance in particular has proven to be an effective means of mobilizing patients physically, engaging them socially, and uplifting them emotionally.

Your donation will make a huge difference in the quality of a person’s life by opening the door to this power of dance. Because Rx Ballroom Dance operates with minimal overhead, monetary donations go directly toward providing group dance classes multiple times a week for our participants. The classes are specifically designed to address their conditions, with a focus on improving balance and coordination while having a great time in a social setting! To track our participants progress and ensure the classes are doing what they’re designed to do, we conduct periodic surveys to assess changes in participants’ physical, mental and emotional wellbeing both in class and in their daily lives outside of the dance studio.

Classes are underway, but we need your support moving into 2020. Your gift this season can provide the following for a member of Rx Ballroom Dance:

$25= 1 Class
$50= 1 Week of Classes
$200= 1 Month of Classes
$400= 1 Semester of Classes

You can donate easily right now by clicking here.

Hope for these participants lies in preserving their capacities by fully exercising them. There is no better way than dance. We know it and live by it, and with your help, they will as well.

Please join us in bringing them to the dance floor!

Another Successful Fundraiser!

Rx Ballroom Dance slays another fundraising night last week at the ever generous Londance Studio in Laguna Niguel, CA.

Because of competition gown, practice wear and shoe donations, we were able to auction off over $1700 worth of items to raise money towards ballroom dance classes for people with neurological disease! That’s nearly a full semester of classes fully funded!

Your donations have made the difference for:
1. Participants with Alzheimer’s gaining rhythmic coordination and confidence in speaking and socializing
2. Participants with Parkinson’s gaining better alignment, posture and balance
3. Caregivers being able to enjoy themselves and be directly involved in an activity that benefits both them and their loved one
4. Overall improvement in physical, mental and social/emotional growth by all!

Can’t donate right now? Consider volunteering and being a dance partner in one of our Rx Ballroom Dance classes! We would love to have your help. Contact us today.
